President Mohamed Muizzu announced a national drive to plant five million trees across the Maldives.

The President made the announcement while delivering the Maldives’ National Statement at the high-level segment of the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Addressing world leaders, the president emphasised that increasing the resilience of our islands is a top priority. He conveyed that every piece of coral, every grain of sand, every fish, and every palm tree in our island nation holds value, and their loss impacts not only the economy but also our country as a whole.

The president emphasised the significance of liveable ecosystems, crucial for sustaining human life. He expressed hope that the fund would function as intended and be readily available to those in need.

Highlighting his role as a global citizen, the president acknowledged a shared responsibility to the planet. He urged cooperation to ensure that each action yields tangible results, fulfilling our collective obligations towards a better planet.
