Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will work to prevent dictatorship from reviving in the country, the main opposition party's chairman Fayyaz Ismail said Friday.
The former economic minister made the remarks on X after 13 MPs, mainly from MDP, signed up to the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) on Thursday.
In the post, Fayyaz said he was grateful to the MPs who left the MDP for their work. He said the MDP would continue in its efforts to prevent the revival of dictatorship in the country at this time.
The MPs handed over the forms to President Mohamed Muizzu, who also serves as the PNC president, and the party's chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdullah during a ceremony held at Dharubaaruge Thursday evening.

With the 13 MPs who signed up for the PNC Thursday evening, the total number of government MPs in parliament will rise to 17.
MDP has lost its majority in parliament.
