Six people who were arrested and remanded in custody following the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest on 3 October have been released.
A total of eight individuals, including two former Members of Parliament, were arrested during the protest. Six of them were detained for 15 days at Dhoonidhoo jail.
The six were brought before the Criminal Court on Sunday for a decision on their remand, after which the court ordered their release.
Among those arrested were:
-
Former Dhandhoo MP Yousuf Abdulla
-
Former Kulhudhuffushi North MP Yasir Abdul Latheef
-
K. Maafushi Council President Hassan Solah
The protest was dispersed by police after demonstrators attempted to march along Majeedhee Magu, disregarding the designated route set by authorities.
Police said they used force, including pepper spray and sonic devices, to disperse the crowd after protesters allegedly threw stones and water bottles and attempted to seize police equipment.
The MDP protest was part of a series of demonstrations organised by the opposition party earlier this month.
