The Maldives Police Service has stated that the hospitalisation of an individual during a rally held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Tuesday night was not related to police action.
The statement follows the circulation of images on social media claiming that the individual required medical treatment after the use of tasers or electric batons during the protest.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, police acknowledged reports that a person taken to hospital from the protest area had sustained injuries.
Police said there was no connection between their operations to manage the gathering and the individual’s condition.
They stated that no force was used in controlling the protest and confirmed that the incident did not result from any measures taken by officers at the scene.
Police also warned that the spread of inaccurate information affects public confidence in institutions and the delivery of services.
They urged the public to verify information before sharing it.
