The victory of the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) in the Mayoral election held this Saturday is an end to the defeat and a new spirit to move forward with, the party's Chairman Fayyaz Ismail said on Saturday evening.
The provisional results of the mayoral by-election show that Azim had won over the ruling PNC candidate Azima Shukoor by a huge margin.
"First of all, thank God. We are seeing dark days ahead. We were defeated, but those days have come to a close now, hopefully. We now have the opportunity to work in a new spirit," Fayyaz told Atoll Times.
The MDP won this victory after a huge defeat in last year's presidential election. When Fayyaz mentioned ‘defeat’, he was referring to the election.
He said the election results clearly showed where the people of the city stood. They have no support for this government now, he said.
"The people of Male have very clearly shown that the people of Male think about these things and that there is an incompetent government today. We are seeing things being done without any thought," Fayyaz said.
"So, we hopefully got a new spirit, a new strength with this [victory]. We will do everything we can to sort things out and hopefully gain more victories and save the country from the dark clouds that are hovering over it”.
Repeating the MDP's persistent claims that the government came to power by making many lies and creating seditions, Fayyaz said the results have shown that they cannot continue with any more lies.
With this new spirit, the MDP will remain 'at the forefront of saving Maldives', as the responsible opposition party they are, he said.
