The swearing-in ceremony of Adam Azim who won Saturday's by-election for Male mayor, will be held within the next three days, the Local Government Authority (LGA) said Tuesday.

The post of mayor became vacant after President Mohamed Muizzu resigned on November 17 to assume the presidency.

LGA CEO Dr Mariam Zulfa told Atoll Times that Azim's swearing-in ceremony is expected to be held within the next few days.

Zulfa said preparations for the swearing-in ceremony have begun after the Elections Commission (EC) announced the final results Monday evening.

According to Zulfa:

  • President Muizzu is likely to attend the ceremony

  • The ceremony will be held at the local government ministry

According to the 'General Rules of Procedure for Local Councils', if the mayor or deputy mayor of the council resigns, a successor must be elected to fill the vacancy within a maximum of one month from the date of vacancy. If a member has not been elected to the office within that period, no other matter shall be discussed in the council until a member is elected to the office.
