Former Vice President Faisal Naseem on Sunday quit Jumhooree Party (JP).
Faisal confirmed to Atoll Times that he has decided to leave the JP and has shared it with party leader Gasim Ibrahim. The JP also confirmed receipt of Faisal’s resignation letter.
Faisal, who became the vice president in a JP slot and previously worked in Gasim's businesses, told Atoll Times that he has not been involved in the party's activities.
“I told the leader that I thought it was best to leave the party at the moment,” Faisal said.
He said he would not join any party at the moment but would likely join one in the near future.
"It's not that I'm leaving because I'm joining a particular party. But if I'm in politics, I'm going to be in some political party," he said.
Faisal, who was previously the member of parliament for Kaashidhoo constituency, served as the vice president of Maldives from 2018 to 2023. He was the only vice president to serve a full term.
Faisal was initially expected to be named as then President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's running mate as he contested the September presidential election to secure his re-election, but Solih chose incumbent parliament speaker Mohamed Aslam as his running mater. Faisal later expressed his dissatisfaction with the matter.
However, Faisal campaigned for MDP candidate and mayor-elect Adam Azim in the recent Male City Council by-election.
