Talks with Egyptian company underway for Addu bridge project

30 million has been included in this year's budget for the Addu Bridge.

The government has decided to start talks with an Egyptian company to reach an agreement to hand over the Hulhumeedhoo-Hithadhoo bridge project in Addu to the company.

An Egyptian company, The Arab Contractors, had submitted a proposal to implement the Hulhumeedhoo Bridge project, Minister Abdullah Nazim said at a press conference at the President’s Office, Sunday.Thus:

  • The Economic Council meeting held on Wednesday decided to start negotiations to reach an agreement to hand over the bridge project

Nazim said the company has given the government an indication that it will conduct the studies for the bridge free of charge. The Economic Council has decided to hand over the works to the company if things are arranged, he said.

Who are The Arab Contractors?

According to its website, the company has major infrastructure development projects in the Middle East and Africa. They include:

  • The company operates projects in 29 countries

  • The company is mainly involved in the construction of bridges, highways, waterways, ports, metros and large buildings

  • The company also funds a team that plays in the official Egyptian football league

Government officials have revealed that they have received a proposal from an interested company to build the bridge during a forum with investors during President Mohammed Muizzu’s recent visit to China. However, the government did not disclose details.

30 million has been included in this year's budget for the Addu Bridge.
