FAM to hold extraordinary congress to elect committees
Thorig filed the case with FIFA and the AFC after that, both of which ruled in his favor.
The executive committee of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) on Thursday decided to do as suggested by FIFA and AFC, to cancel the FAM elections scheduled for January 31 and form committees in accordance with the rules and call for fresh elections after.
The date, time and agenda of the special congress will be announced later, the association said.
10 FAM member clubs have called for an extraordinary congress before FIFA and the AFC decided against the FAM over the candidacy rejection of former forward and current Mahibadhoo constituency parliament member Ahmed Thorig.
According to FAM rules, a congress must be held if the majority of member clubs request it. The FAM currently has 18 member clubs.
The FAM said in a statement that it would not put the interests of any other party above the interests of football.
"The association will not do anything that would infringe on the rights of any member," the statement said.
"The association will do everything possible to ensure the rights of all members”.
Thorig's candidacy was rejected pn grounds that he did not have the support of at least three first division clubs. Thorig's candidacy went to that state after Valencia, which supported him, also supported the other candidate Mufawiz Hashim (Mufa) and both the proposals were rejected by the FAM electoral committee for the conflict.
However, the problem with the FAM was that the electoral committee was elected illegally last year. In addition, the Electoral Appeal Committee, which should have been elected along with the Electoral Committee, was not elected. Therefore, there was no committee within the FAM to look into Thorig's candidacy issues.
Thorig filed the case with FIFA and the AFC after that, both of which ruled in his favor. The FAM was ordered to suspend the election, form committees in accordance with the rules and call for a new election.
The new FAM election comes amid a massive campaign to oust two-term president Bassem Adil Jaleel. He did not contest this election.
Police are also conducting an investigation on the orders of the Prosecutor General (PG) on charges of money laundering within the FAM. The investigation also makes serious allegations against Bassam.
