Opposition activist appointed to senior post at STELCO
Thoyyib was the Senior Executive Director of the Ministry of Tourism in the government of former President Solih.
State Electric Company (STELCO) has appointed Thoyyib Shaheem, a former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) social media activist and senior official in the Tourism Ministry during the government of President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih.
STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahumy confirmed to Atoll Times on Sunday that Thoyyib has been given a job. However, when asked what position he was given, he said he would have to look into it.
Thoyyib was the Senior Executive Director of the Ministry of Tourism in the government of former President Solih.
However, during the tenure of former President Abdullah Yameen, Thoyyib was a senior activist critical of the government.
-
Thoyyib was arrested in 2017 on charges of spreading false information and intimidating the public
-
Amnesty International had declared him a 'prisoner of conscience' for being arrested as he was exercising his right to freedom of expression
-
After the High Court released him in the case, he lived in Sri Lanka until Solih came to power
Thoyyib is one of the most prominent MDP activists on social media. During Yameen’s tenure his mobile phone SIM information was also confiscated under a court order.
