The Election Commission (EC) has opened a week-long re-registration period to give more opportunities for voters to cast their votes easily on polling day, following the change in the date of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

At first, the Election Commission decided to hold the elections on March 17. However, with the amendment to the Election Act, the Commission decided to hold the election on April 21. EC has earlier said that more time will be allowed for re-registration if the date was changed.

The Commission's Vice-President and Spokesperson Ismail Habeeb told Atoll Times on Sunday that re-registration is open from 2:00 pm Sunday until next Saturday.

"Even if people who have already re-registered and want to vote elsewhere, they can re-register now, again. We are giving about a week’s time. So, we ask everyone who wishes to re-register to do so as soon as possible without delaying till the last day," Habeeb said.

When the election was scheduled for the first date, more than 11,000 people re-registered. Re-registration was opened to those who wanted to vote in a place other than where they were already registered, for the second round of the last presidential election. In addition, voters abroad and in industrial islands have to re-register.

Habeeb said if those who re-registered did not wish to change their polling stations again, they would not need to re-register.

Re-registration can be submitted online through the EC's re-registration portal. The Commission has already said that the councils in all residential islands except Male will provide assistance to submit forms online. In the city, registration is available at the Election Center at Dharubaaruge.

The information of the place where one is registered to vote can be checked via:
