As of latest provisional results, the ruling party People’s National Congress (PNC) candidates are leading in 62 constituencies.
Main opposition MDP appears to have lost major strongholds, with PNC wrestling support from the capital Male and major cities including Addu and Kulhudhuffushi.
Preliminary results indicate that the ruling party is on course to secure super majority in the 93 constituents.
This victory would be a huge boost for incumbent president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu who won the presidency in November last year.
The turnout stood at 72.96% when the polls began to close.
The total number of eligible voters is 284,663. Of these, 207,693 voters cast their ballots when the Election Commission last released the figures. The number of abstentions was 76,970.
Here are some figures from previous elections:
-
2009: 78.15%
-
2014: 78.80%
-
2019: 81.32%
According to the Election Commission, this is the lowest turnout in the parliamentary elections held under the new constitution.
Interestingly, the Maamigili constituency remains with Gasim Ibrahim while Abdullah Jabir lost his constituency. While ## boxes remain to be counted, the provisional results seem to provide that PNC has taken an undefeatable majority of the 20th People's Majlis.
