A tourist's drone, handbag and other items were stolen from where he had kept them on Fuvahmulah beach while he had gone in for a dip.

Police told Atoll Times on Sunday that the tourist was robbed on Saturday evening.

Police said they were investigating the incident after a video of the tourist talking about what had happened to him went viral on social media. Police said the suspect has now been identified.

The tourist said a large amount of money, including a drone and mobile phone, was stolen from the beach when he’d stepped away for a swim. The motorcycle he was using was also gone, he said.

While flying the drone at the beach before going for his swim, two boys approached him and asked him about the price of the drone and other related questions, he said. He estimates they are 15 and 17 year old students.

According to him:

  • After talking to the children for a few minutes, he left the drone and other items on the beach and went to take a dip

  • While in the water, he saw the kids take his bike; no one tried to stop them

  • Then the drone under the towel and his two bags on the beach were taken away

According to the tourist, one of these bags was a backpack, while the other was a fanny pack and it contained cash, his credit cards and important travel documents. He said he was more concerned about retrieving his phone and important documents than the cash that was stolen.

The amount of money the tourist reported stolen:

  • USD 200, in cards

  • USD 350 in cash

  • MVR 1500
