Police recover items stolen from tourist, arrests two

Two people have been arrested in connection with the robbery that took place on the 24th of last month, according to Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan.

All the belongings of a tourist robbed in Fuvahmulah, which were stolen from the beach as he was swimming nearby, have been recovered.

A video of the tourist talking about the robbery went viral on social media. In the video, the tourist said a large amount of cash, including a drone and mobile phone was stolen from the beach when he had stepped away for a swim. The bike he was using was also gone, he said.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the robbery that took place on the 24th of last month, according to Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan.

He said all the items reported missing from the tourist have been recovered.

The tourist said the stolen items included his drone, phone, credit cards and MVR 1,500 and USD 200 in cash.

According to him, two boys had approached him and asked him about the price of the drone and other related questions while he was flying the drone on the beach at first. He estimated them to be 15 and 17 year old students.

The tourist also said:

  • After talking to the children for a few minutes, he left the drone and other items on the beach and went in for a dip

  • While in the water, he saw the kids take his bike; no one tried to stop them

  • Then the drone under the towel and his two bags on the beach were taken away.
