Deputy Commissioner and Acting Commissioner of Police, Ismail Naveen, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police.
The position became vacant following the resignation of former Commissioner Ali Shujau in April. Three candidates, including Naveen, had applied for the role.
A senior government official confirmed to Daur that Naveen was appointed to the position on Tuesday.
The other applicants for the post were Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikri and South Police Commander and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shameem. All three candidates were interviewed by the Police Board last week, which found them qualified for the position.
According to the Police Act, the Commissioner of Police is appointed by the President, based on the advice of the Minister of Home Affairs. The Home Minister makes a recommendation following the Police Board’s evaluation and interview of the candidates.
