Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry has been appointed to oversee the management of the Maldives Police Service on an interim basis following the retirement of former Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen, police said on Thursday.

Naveen, who assumed office in June last year, announced his retirement on Wednesday. In a post on X, he said he retired after nearly 32 years in the police service.

In a statement, police said Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihsan appointed Farhad as the temporary head of the Maldives Police Service with effect from 18 February 2026, in accordance with Article 58(c) of the Maldives Police Service Act.

The appointment follows recent developments involving the police board, which had earlier decided to dismiss several senior police officers.

Farhad was promoted from Assistant Commissioner to Deputy Commissioner in 2024. His appointment took place while a case related to decisions of the police board was pending before the High Court.

The High Court has since dismissed the case, finding that the prosecution had misused the judicial process by granting promotions to some officers who had previously been removed by the police board.
