According to police, the programme was delivered by the US Diplomatic Security and Anti-Terrorism Assistance programme from 22 May to 4 June at Velana International Airport.
The training focused on operational procedures involving K9 units and included both practical and classroom-based sessions.
Areas covered during the programme included:
-
Conducting indoor and outdoor operations using K9 units.
-
Search tactics and techniques employed during sniffer dog operations.
-
First aid training delivered under the guidance of a US veterinarian.
-
Procedures for vehicle searches and inspections.
Police said the programme was aimed at strengthening operational capabilities in the use of sniffer dogs for security and law enforcement activities.
The Maldives Police Service first introduced sniffer dogs into its operations in 2015. In 2022, an additional 10 dogs were brought into service for counter-terrorism operations.
K9 units are currently used by several agencies, including the Maldives Police Service, Maldives Customs Service, Maldives Ports Limited, and airport security authorities.
The units are also deployed for security operations at domestic and international events held in the Maldives.
Police said the training forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen operational readiness and enhance the capabilities of personnel working with K9 teams.
