The Maldives Police Service has begun towing vehicles parked illegally on pedestrian footpaths and walkways in Hulhumalé.

Police said on Tuesday that the operation targets vehicles parked on areas designated for pedestrians.

The service reminded motorists that, under the law, vehicles are not permitted to be driven or parked on footpaths or pedestrian walkways. The only exceptions are baby strollers and manually operated wheelchairs used by persons with disabilities.

Police also urged vehicle owners to avoid parking in pedestrian areas.

On Monday, police issued a public advisory after reporting an increase in vehicles being parked on footpaths across Hulhumalé.

Parking has become an increasing concern as Hulhumalé's population has grown. Vehicles parked on footpaths and along roadsides have affected traffic flow and reduced access for pedestrians using public walkways.
