Five expatriate workers died in a fire at an accommodation block in Dhigurah early Friday morning.
According to Maldives Police Service, the incident was reported at about 2:00 am.
Police said eight people were injured in the fire. Five of them died.
Two of the injured were transferred to Malé for treatment, while another person who was treated at the local health centre has been released.
Police said a team will travel to Dhigurah to investigate the incident. The team will include a medical doctor.
President of the Dhigurah Island Council, Ibrahim Usman, told Atoll Times that about 30 people were living in the accommodation block at the time of the incident.
He said some of the residents were asleep when the fire started.
