Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer has welcomed the United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution calling for an end to Israeli attacks on Gaza.
The resolution was passed by the UN Security Council on Monday. The United States abstained from voting, but the remaining 14 council members voted for the resolution.
Minister Zameer, in a post on 'X' welcomed the passage of the resolution calling for a ceasefire for the month of Ramadan.
"We deem the adoption of this resolution as a crucial step towards ensuring a lasting and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza," the minister said in his post.
"The resolution must now be fully implemented and the people of Palestine must receive the humanitarian aid they so urgently need”.
This is the first time the UN has been able to pass a ceasefire resolution since the conflict began in October 2023. Such resolutions have been submitted to the Security Council in the past but have not been passed due to a veto by the United States. The U.S. has vetoed three draft council resolutions on the war in Gaza.
The resolution also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
