Home ministry on Monday extended the application window for membership of Maldives Media Council (MMC).
This is the third time that applications have been invited for membership of the MMC. The home ministry, which first announced on August 23, revoked the first invitation three days later on the grounds that more preparations were needed to hold the MMC elections.
Subsequently, the procedure for electing members to MMC was amended and application window was reopened on October 12.
This is the third time that the MMC membership has been opened as the home ministry said that the earlier notification expired Sunday and people did not apply as per the provisions of the Media Council Act. Applications are open:
-
for the seven members representing the media
-
for the post of six general members
-
Candidates for seats representing media will be submitted by media
-
General members are considered to be those who do not work in a media-related field
As per the new notification, eligible candidates can apply to the post through the prescribed form on or before November 2.
According to the new policy, inactive newspapers as well as newspapers, magazines and broadcasters registered under state-owned companies and state institutions cannot vote in the MMC election.
The council employs eight media representatives and seven members from the general public.
