Maldives has decided to increase its contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) fund for Palestinian refugees to USD 50,000, Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer announced Wednesday
Minister Zameer made the remarks while speaking at the launch of the 'Maldivians with Palestine' telethon organised by PSM under the initiative of President Mohammed Muizzu to help the Palestinian people.
The minister said Maldives used to contribute USD 5,000 to the fund.
'The President has donated USD 50,000 to the fund this year in response to Israeli attacks on Palestine since October 7 last year. We have decided to donate 10 times the amount previously given,” the minister said.
The proceeds of Wednesday’s telethon will be handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Monetary Authority of Maldives (MMA) under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance.
Crowe Maldives has also been commissioned to conduct an independent audit to ensure that the money is handed over.
PSM's telethon will continue until midnight on Wednesday. The proceeds of the telethon will be distributed to Palestine in a transparent manner. The First Lady and the president have also contributed to the telethon personally.
