Police said on Saturday evening that efforts are being made to ‘create an environment for the resumption of operations’ at Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) factory in Hulhumeedhoo, Addu, after protesting fishermen have disrupted the factory’s operations.
Fishermen have been protesting at the Addu Fisheries Complex of MIFCO since Friday, saying they have not been getting paid for fish purchased from them for the past three months. Police issued a statement on Saturday evening as the factory's operations were disrupted due to these protests.
"The operations of MIFCO's Addu Fisheries Complex have been disrupted due to the protest and the Maldivian Police Service is working to create an environment for the resumption of operations," the statement said.
The statement added:
-
The protest is being allowed to continue peacefully within the legal framework
-
The fishermen are also requested to cooperate with the measures taken by the police to ensure peace and security
“The police will establish a security line and provide necessary assistance to the fishermen to express their concerns and feelings within the limits of the Freedom of Assembly and Expression Act and other laws and regulations,” police said.
