Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) says it is working to pay the outstanding money to fishermen this Thursday.
Fishermen have been protesting at the Addu Fisheries Complex (AFC) since Friday over the alleged lack of payment for the fish bought by MIFCO in the past three months.
MIFCO is working to arrange the money owed to the fishermen, according to a media message sent by the company on Thursday.
"We’ve received information that work is underway to settle MVR 52 million. However, we have not received confirmation yet," MIFCO said in the message.
MIFCO said the government is likely to announce it after the funds are arranged.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam said on Sunday that the fishermen would be paid within this week.
Fishermen have banned the fish factory employees from entering the complex after they suspended the operation. MIFCO does not know the condition of the facility or the tonnes of fish inside it. The company said it is working to bring the facility back into operation.
More than 100 people, including foreigners, are employed at the AFC.
