Two men found caged for not paying restaurant bill

Police report that the incident, where a mob forced two men into a birdcage and kept them captive, occurred due to money owed by the men to a restaurant.

Videos of two men locked inside a bird cage went viral on social media on Saturday evening, prompting the police to investigate the case. Many were raising questions about whether the men were kidnapped.

Two videos posted on TikTok are still circulating, believed to have been taken by the people involved in the detaining of two people in the birdcage. The videos show:

  • Two men are locked in a large birdcage; one video also shows a man standing outside the birdcage, spraying water into the cage with a hose

  • The speech audible in the video indicate that they are having a money issue; the one recording can be heard mentioning MVR 39,000

  • One of the people in the cage assures that he would get the money and asked for some time to arrange it

Police are now investigating the matter.

So far, Police have confirmed that the two men were detained thus for not paying for meals at a restaurant, he said. Further investigations are underway and no arrests have been made, he added.

Kidnapping cases have seen a rise in Maldives lately, and the public is expressing concern about the lack of safety in the society.
