Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim said on Wednesday that the constitution should be changed in such a way that it cannot be altered at the whim of whoever has a parliamentary majority.
Gasim said this while speaking on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the Constitution being marked on Wednesday. As such, he said the existing powers of the parliament need to be amended.
Gasim said this is required because an idea that comes to a group of people's minds may interfere with the basic rights of the people and the provisions in the Constitution to protect Islam.
“Instead of granting all the powers like the Parliament now has to amend the Constitution, we need to look at a kind of mechanism that will hinder changes like that,” he said.
"Article 10 of the Constitution says that we are Muslims, Islam, our religion is not to make any law that is contrary to the principle of Islam... But the law on zakat and taxation is not the principle of Islam. Prophet Tax We know how the extraction system has been explained to us.
“Article 10 of the Constitution says that we are Muslim and Islam is our religion. No law should be made against the essence of Islam... But as far as zakat is concerned, tax collection is concerned, does it go against the principles of Islam? We know how the Prophet has revealed to us the system of taxation.”
Gasim said the next parliament that gets elected will change the Constitution as they want once they get a majority in parliament, and it might not be in the best interests of the people.
The previous rule is better in changing the Constitution, he said. Under the previous rule, the Constitution could be changed by convening a special assembly.
