India's top diplomat concludes 3-day Maldives visit

Jaishankar paid a courtesy call on President Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Maldives on Saturday.

Indian external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar left Maldives on Sunday after completing a three-day official visit.

Jaishankar, who arrived on Friday, flew to the southernmost Addu Sunday morning to attend the handover ceremony of two already completed Indian loan-funded projects in the city. He flew back to New Delhi from Addu. 

Jaishankar paid a courtesy call on President Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Maldives on Saturday.

In addition:

  • Jaishankar also held talks with Maldives' foreign minister Moosa Zameer

  • Met economic minister Mohamed Saeed to discus strengthening trade relations between Maldives and India

  • Attended a dinner hosted by Zameer in honuor of Jaishankar

  • Planted a tree in support of the government's 5 million tree programme

  • Visited the site of the Indian-aided Thilamale Bridge and inspected the progress of the work

  • Inaugurated several projects carried out in island with the assistance of India

  • Met with senior opposition MDP leaders

Jaishankar's visit is the first official visit by an Indian minister to Maldives in the government of President Muizzu, who was sworn in November. 

Jaishankar's visit shows that Maldives-India relations are recovering.
