Maldives hands over MVR 19m raised in Palestine telethon

The telethon was initiated by President Mohamed Muizzu on June 12.

More than MVR 19 million raised by the government's telethon to provide aid to the Palestinian people have been sent to the UN relief agency for Palestinians in need.

The telethon was initiated by President Mohamed Muizzu on June 12. Several organisations, companies and the public contributed money to the one-day telethon.

A foreign ministry official confirmed to Atoll Times that the money has been sent to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Atoll Times has received a copy of the TT used by the finance ministry to send the money to UNRWA through the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA): According to the TT:

  • MVR 19.3 million was sent

  • Funds were sent in dollars

Public Service Media (PSM) handed over the money to the government last month. To ensure transparency, the telethon was audited by Crow Maldives.
