Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem will appear before the Judiciary Committee of the Parliament on Thursday to respond to the motion to remove him from office.
Hulhudhoo PNC MP Mohamed Shahid moved the Judiciary Committee of the Parliament on 13th of this month to remove Hussain Shameem from the post of Prosecutor General. He sent a seven-page letter to the committee stating eight reasons for Shameem's dismissal.
The reasons given in Shahid's letter are:
-
1-
Former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed's case charged with rape has been filed without adequate reason
-
2-
Filing of MMPRC corruption case against former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof for violating the rules established in the criminal justice system
-
3-
PG Shameem decided not to appeal lower court’s decision in the safari rape case
-
4-
Withdrawal of human trafficking charges filed against former Landhoo Constituency Member Ali Riza
-
5-
Withdrawal of charges in cases related to consumption of alcohol
-
6-
Failure to prosecute corruption involved in the purchase of ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic
-
7-
Nepotism among the employees of the Prosecutor's Office
-
8-
No action was taken against PG Prosecutor and Spokesperson Ahmed Shafeeu's alleged homosexuality and blasphemy
Tuesday's Judiciary Committee announced that Shameem will appear before the committee on Thursday. The deadline for Shameem to respond to the case expires on Wednesday.
At Tuesday’s committee meeting, Fuvahmulah Central MP Ali Fazal sought in writing regarding what the PG had decided on some of the issues raised in the case. The issues are:
-
Former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed's case charged with rape has been filed without proper reason
-
Filing of MMPRC corruption case against former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof for violating the rules established in the criminal justice system
-
Withdrawal of human trafficking charges filed against former Landhoo Constituency Member Ali Riza
-
Failure to prosecute corruption involved in the purchase of ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic
It was also passed on Tuesday to seek what policy was adopted by the PG on the issue of foreign travel to certain employees of the PG office.
According to the current rules of the Parliament, the Judiciary Committee must first approve the removal of Shameem from the post of Prosecutor General. The committee will then announce a no-confidence motion against Shameem.
The committee will then take a decision on the no-confidence motion against Shameem and submit it to the Parliament for approval.
Shahid did not include the issue of the Prosecutor General's Office withdrawing a bribery charge against former MP Nihan Hussain Manik, which too Shameem had decided not to prosecute. However, it was also a case that Shameem withdrew.
Nihan is now the Bureau Chief of the Parliament.
