President vows stricter action against reckless drivers

Hassan Samah, 23, a prison guard working for the Correctional Service, was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a speeding sports car Friday morning.

President Mohamed Muizzu on Friday said that the relevant government agencies have been asked to make necessary changes to the laws and regulations to take strict measures against speeding vehicles.

Hassan Samah, 23, a prison guard working for the Correctional Service, was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a speeding sports car before attending a marathon in Hulhumale Friday morning.

In a post on X following the accident, the president said that strict measures will be taken against those who drive at high speed in any islands of Maldives at any time.

In addition, the president said:

  • Everyone's cooperation is needed to prevent such accidents

  • The government will do everything necessary to make the roads in capital Male and islands safe for everyone

"Another person lost his life in a very tragic accident last night due to dangerous driving. May God grant the soul of 23-year-old Hassan Samah who passed away last night and may God grant his family patience," the president said in his post.

The accident happened in front of the Ooredoo office building near Central Park at around 2 am.

The young man sustained serious head and face injuries in the accident and died shortly after being taken to Hulhumale Hospital.

Police have identified the driver of a race car that fatally hit a young man on Friday as a 26-year-old Maldivian who did not have a driver's licence. 

Police identified the arrested driver as Mohamed Visam Sidqee from Addu Hithadhoo.
