3 expresses interest in vacant chief prosecutor

Three candidates have cleared their criminal records in their interest in running for the post of Prosecutor General (PG).

The parliament passed a resolution on August 22 to remove Hussein Shameem from the PG's post.

The President’s Office will accept applications for the post until Wednesday. Earlier, three candidates had requested to clear their criminal records.

The three are:

  • Former Chief Justice of the Criminal Court Ahmed Hailam

  • Lawyer Adam Shameem

  • Former High Court judge and Legal Secretary in the President's Office Abbas Shareef

Atoll Times is informed that the three have not yet made a final decision, but declined to comment on the matter.

The process of appointing a person to the post of PG is: 

  • To send to parliament the names of the candidates whom the president sees fit

  • Approval of a name by the parliament from among the names sent by the president

  • The person approved by the parliament shall be appointed as the PG and the president shall confer on him the letter of appointment

The Prosecutor General's Act requires a new prosecutor to be appointed within 30 days of the vacancy.

The terms of the PG position are:

  • Be 25 years of age or older

  • Not be a person who has been convicted of an offence prescribed in Islam or an offence of fraud or bribery

  • Not be holding an elected or appointed political office

  • Not be a member of a political party

  • Bachelor's degree in law and at least four years of experience working in the judicial and legal fields in Maldives

  • Not be a person who holds a share or position in a company or partnership or any other such entity connected with the legal profession

  • Being of sound mind
