A senior official involved in operating the Telegram network ‘Jazeera’ has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Criminal Court.

Ibrahim Rasheed was among three individuals accused in the case and was convicted this month. The court found him guilty following a plea agreement with the state.

The Criminal Court issued judgments on 16 July concerning two specific charges against Ali Rasheed. These were:

  • Money laundering

  • Knowingly using proceeds from another person’s prostitution

As per the court ruling, Ali Rasheed received two years and six months imprisonment for money laundering and one year and six months for knowingly using the proceeds of prostitution. Combined, the total sentence is four years.

After deducting time already served, Ali Rasheed is to remain in prison for two years, eight months, and 13 days. In addition, he has been fined MVR 463,637.61, which must be paid within 60 days.

The Prosecutor General’s Office earlier stated that additional charges, including distribution of obscene material and prostitution in the Maldives, had also been filed. The status of those charges remains unclear, as plea agreements can result in the withdrawal of certain charges.

Two others have been charged in the case:

  • Nishani Ali, of Redhinnge, Th. Veymandoo

  • Aisar Naseem, of Veleege, Gdh. Rathafandhoo

They face multiple charges, including:

  • Possession or return of indecent material: punishable by four months and 23 days in jail

  • Money laundering: punishable by a fine of MVR 1 million and imprisonment of 5 to 15 years

  • Public promotion of drug use or trafficking: punishable by three years’ imprisonment

  • Knowingly using proceeds of prostitution: punishable by a fine between MVR 25,000 and MVR 75,000 or a minimum sentence of three years’ imprisonment
