Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which mostly spread among children, is spreading rapidly.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) said on Wednesday that RSV cases among children have increased and the situation is being closely monitored. It urges the public to stay vigilant during these times to prevent further spread of the disease.

The HPA has identified the following measures to prevent the spread of the disease:

  • Wash hands thoroughly

  • Do not go to crowded places

  • Wear masks and other items

Speaking about the disease, paediatrician Dr Abdulla Niyaf said earlier that it is caused by a virus, mainly respiratory infection. The disease causes symptoms such as fever and chills, more common than influenza.

According to Niyaf:

  • The disease affects older children more

  • The chest becomes congested and children have difficulty breathing

  • Infants with RSV have a prolonged illness for a week or 10 days

  • Severely ill children prolong their illness for longer

The HPA has advised people to seek medical attention as soon as possible if they have cough, cough or breathing difficulties.
