India's RuPay card introduced in Maldives

India's card payment network, RuPay has been launched in Maldives.

The RuPay was introduced in Maldives virtually at a ceremony held on Monday during President Mohamed Muizzu's visit to India.

Bank of Maldives (BML) signed an agreement with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in December 2019.

RuPay is a very popular debit and credit card payment network in India.

The RuPay card will be available at BML ATMs, POS machines and other digital channels.

In addition, prepaid cards will enable the users to use the card at ATMs and POS machines in India as well as make digital payments in India.

President Muizzu, in a joint statement with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, said the introduction of the RuPay in Maldives would greatly facilitate the people of both countries.

An agreement was signed with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in August to introduce the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Maldives. The agreement was signed during the visit of Indian foreign minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
