President Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday announced plans to address corruption and inefficiencies within the state-owned fish company, Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
Speaking to reporters following his visit to Huvadhu Atoll, the president outlined steps being taken to strengthen the company’s management and operations.
President Muizzu stated that a foreign CEO has been appointed to lead MIFCO as part of efforts to reform the company. The move, he said, aligns with his administration's commitment to improving the organisation’s governance and reducing unnecessary expenditure.
“There are outdated practices at MIFCO that I believe constitute acts of corruption. We are working to eliminate these practices,” the president said. “Reforms are already underway, and we have brought in an external expert to lead the changes. These efforts are being closely monitored to ensure they align with our objectives.”
The president emphasised that MIFCO’s operations would be restructured to meet the needs of fishermen more effectively.
Last month, Dr Vitaliy Lyubimov, a Ukrainian national with two decades of experience in crisis management, was appointed as MIFCO’s CEO.
