Govt revenue exceeds expenditure in first 3 weeks of 2025

As of 23 January, government expenditure stood at MVR 846.4 million, while revenue during the period reached MVR 1.3 billion.

Government's revenue surpassed its expenditure in the first three weeks of 2025, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance Tuesday.

As of 23 January, government expenditure stood at MVR 846.4 million, while revenue during the period reached MVR 1.3 billion.

According to the Finance Ministry, all government expenditure in this period was recurrent expenditure. The breakdown of revenue is as follows:

  • 79% of revenue came from taxes, amounting to approximately MVR 1 billion.

  • 21% of revenue was from non-tax sources, totalling MVR 275 million.

  • MVR 4.2 million was received as grant aid.

The government spent MVR 152 million on salaries and allowances during this period, compared to MVR 9.2 million in the same period last year.

Travel expenses for the first 23 days of January this year amounted to MVR 5.1 million, a decrease from MVR 17.6 million in the same period last year.

Expenditure on the Aasandha health insurance scheme stood at MVR 62.6 million in the first 23 days of this year, compared to MVR 109.8 million during the same period in 2023.
