Maldives on Thursday conveyed its appreciation to India for its continued support in facilitating the supply of essential commodities for the year 2025-26.

The arrangement, which ensures the availability of key goods in the Maldives, reflects the ongoing partnership and cooperation between the two countries.

India has approved increased export quotas for essential commodities to the Maldives for the year 2025-26 under a bilateral mechanism requested by the Maldivian government.

The revised quotas represent the highest allocations since the arrangement was established in 1981.

The quota for river sand and stone aggregates, which are significant for the Maldives' construction industry, has been raised by 30% to 1,300,000 metric tonnes.

Additionally, quotas for eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, rice, and wheat flour have been increased by 5%, while the quota for pulses (dal) has seen a 56% increase.

In previous years, India continued to supply rice, sugar, and onions to the Maldives despite global export restrictions on these items.

India has reiterated its commitment to supporting the Maldives as part of its Neighbourhood First policy.
