Proposals invited for Maafaru airport terminal expansion
The airport was originally designed to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft.
Island Aviation Services (IAS) has opened the bidding process for the terminal expansion project at N. Maafaru International Airport.
The company is seeking proposals on a contractor-finance basis.
According to the announcement, interested parties must submit expressions of interest by 17 April 2025.
The expansion will involve the construction of a terminal with two floors. Maafaru International Airport, which was developed with assistance from the Abu Dhabi Fund, is currently managed by IAS. The airport serves a region with a high concentration of resorts and is regularly used by private jets.
Maafaru International Airport currently handles the second highest number of private jet movements in the Maldives after Velana International Airport.
Previous announcements related to the terminal expansion include:
-
In 2021, IAS called for consultancy services related to the expansion.
-
In 2023, IAS issued a tender for the terminal expansion project.
-
In the same year, IAS also invited proposals for development under the Rules on Leasing of Villages, Land, or Forests for Tourism Purposes as Cross Subsidies.
The airport was originally designed to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has since been assigned the task of expanding the runway to handle larger aircraft, including Boeing models.
