President Mohamed Muizzu announced on Thursday that the construction of the R. Fainu airport will be handed over to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) next month.

Speaking during his visit to Raa Atoll, the president stated that arrangements have been made for MTCC to begin the practical work on the project shortly.

The president highlighted that previous development in the area, including water and sewerage facilities, overlaps with the planned airport development zone.

"The water and sewerage facilities established by the previous government are located within the airport development area," he said. "To address this, we will ensure the space needed for the airport is cleared at minimal cost while maintaining uninterrupted water and sewerage services."

President Muizzu emphasised the significance of the airport for the economic development of R. Fainu and surrounding communities. He noted that the project would create employment opportunities and promote tourism growth in the region.

"The airport will support the establishment of more resorts in this area, boosting the tourism industry and creating further opportunities," he said.

The President also reiterated his administration's commitment to prioritising the airport's development and supporting the overall growth of the tourism sector in Raa Atoll.

The decision to construct an airport in R. Fainu has been a subject of debate since the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. The project was initially linked to plans for a city hotel and domestic airport, but it faced opposition from residents and environmental groups. Concerns raised at the time included:

  • The use of a significant portion of the island, submerging two-thirds of its area.

  • Loss of farmland critical to the island's agriculture-based income.

  • Potential impact on the island's natural beauty.

The succeeding administration shifted plans, proposing an airport in Beriyanfaru within the same atoll. Currently, Raa Atoll has an airport in Ifuru, with additional efforts underway to enhance connectivity within the region.
