President Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday assured that the construction of an airport in AA. Mathiveri, which he noted as being 'economically viable', will be among the priority new airport projects starting next year.

The president made this statement whilst addressing the residents of Mathiveri Sunday evening.

Speaking at the meeting, the president emphasised that the Mathiveri airport development would benefit both the island and the surrounding region. He noted the project's economic viability and called for the Council and Ministry to collaborate on finalising the plans, following consultations with residents.

The president announced plans for coastal protection and land reclamation work in Mathiveri. He also confirmed that the construction of a new mosque and improvements to the health centre would commence next year.

Addressing the issue of a 40,000-square-foot plot of land that has remained unused for eight years, the president requested the Attorney General to explore legal solutions and promised to work towards terminating the current agreement and transferring the land to island residents.

Outlining the government's two-year development plan, the president announced housing projects as the top priority for next year. These would be followed by developments in the education and healthcare sectors. He added that water and sewerage projects would be the next priority, before moving on to road construction and other social development initiatives.

The president concluded his visit with a tour of Mathiveri Health Centre, where he inspected the ongoing works.
