Dredging work for the airport to be built by the government in F. Nilandhoo has commenced.
The land reclamation project for F.Nilandhoo airport announced by the current government was awarded to MTCC late last month while a major portion of the airport development started by the previous government at Magoodhoo, which is just 10 minutes away from Nilandhoo, has already been completed.
The Nilandhoo land reclamation project’s progress and launch was revealed only when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced it last Saturday during a meeting with Nilandhoo residents on his visit to Faafu atoll. MTCC had not announced it before either.
During the visit, the President also visited the area to inspect the progress of the land reclamation project.
Neither the government nor MTCC has revealed how much the project would cost. MTCC has previously said about the project:
-
Under the agreement, the work is to be completed within 390 days
-
Under the agreement, 42.6 hectares of land will be dredged and 2,098 metres of gravel revetment and 1,400 metres of geobag revetment will be installed
The opposition MDP and the public have also been concerned about the construction of two airports so close by to each other, which it said was a gross waste of state resources. Muizzu’s sister Fathmath Sauda won the PNC parliamentary ticket for Nilandhoo without a primary as she was the only contestant for the constituency.
