President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with fishing vessel captains at the President’s Office on Monday, where they reiterated their request to raise the fish purchase price to MVR 20 per kilogram, in line with a government pledge.
During the meeting, fishermen expressed appreciation for the government’s implementation of proposals raised at a previous meeting in December 2023. They noted that the policy of making fish payments within 48 hours has led to an increase in youth participation in the fishing sector.
At Monday's meeting, the primary requests made by the fishermen included:
-
Increasing the fish purchase price to MVR 20 per kilogram, as previously pledged.
-
Facilitating access to fuel through the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
-
Introducing the use of digital scales in fishing operations.
-
Expanding the number of fish weighing stations and ensuring better value for daily catches.
In response, President Muizzu reiterated his commitment to increase the purchase price of fish to MVR 20 per kilogram. He also stated that efforts were ongoing to make daily payments for fish purchases.
The President noted that bank loan facilities for fishermen have already been initiated and said the government would work to improve access to such financing.
President Muizzu assured the captains that his administration would continue to work closely with the fisheries sector to address the issues raised during the meeting.
