The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has been awarded the contract for the development of an airport in AA. Mathiveri.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday at a ceremony held in Mathiveri. MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed on behalf of the company, while State Minister for Finance Hussain Imran Abdul Muhaimin signed on behalf of the government.
Under the agreement, MACL will invest in the project and take responsibility for designing, developing, and operating the airport. A total of 26.5 hectares of land will be dredged, covering both the area required for the airport and additional land allocated for the people of Mathiveri.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that developing an airport in Mathiveri was one of his key commitments. He stated that the project would directly support Mathiveri and benefit the wider atoll and the tourism industry.
The President assured that the airport would be completed and operational within two and a half years. Earlier in the day, he attended a separate ceremony to mark the commencement of the dredging works.
The Ministry of Construction had announced a tender for the airport’s construction in May this year.
