The practical work to develop L. Kadhdhoo Airport to international standards has commenced.
The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has been awarded the contract to develop the airport, dredge land, and carry out coastal protection in L. Fonadhoo. The agreement was signed during a ceremony held in Fonadhoo on Monday by Finance Minister Moosa Zameer and MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed.
Dredging work for the project began on Tuesday morning and was inaugurated by Minister Zameer.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the President said the project is a key step in the development of the southern region and part of the government’s pledges to the area. He stated that the project aims to be completed within three years, with MACL expected to expedite progress where possible.
“Our goal is to complete all components of the airport within about 36 months from today. MACL will work to complete it even sooner,” the President said.
According to details shared during the ceremony, a total of 144 hectares will be reclaimed—30 hectares for Fonadhoo and 114 hectares for the airport. The upgraded airport will feature a 2,800-metre runway built to international standards.
The dredging will be carried out in a manner that ensures the existing Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) headquarters in Kadhdhoo will not need to be relocated. The dredging phase is expected to be completed within one year.
