Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has announced that licences for airline sales agents will be issued only to companies that are fully owned by Maldivians.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Minister Ameen said the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will soon gazette new regulations governing air transport sales.
“Only 100% domestic companies will be allowed to operate as General Sales Agents (GSA), Passenger Sales Agents (PSA), or Cargo Sales Agents (CSA) under the President’s directive,” he stated.
According to the minister, the decision aims to strengthen Maldivian businesses in the aviation sector, describing it as a change that local companies have been requesting for several years.
The minister did not specify when the new regulation will be gazetted.
Currently, the CAA lists more than 50 air transport sales companies operating in the Maldives. Once the new rule comes into effect, foreign-owned firms and joint ventures will no longer be permitted to engage in such activities.
The ministry expects the change to help retain more profits within the domestic economy.
