Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar on Monday raised concerns over fuel prices following an increase by the State Trading Organisation (STO).
STO increased the prices of petrol and diesel on the 5th of this month.
Under the revision, the price of petrol was increased by MVR 2.51 per litre to MVR 16.01 per litre, representing an increase of 18.6%.
The price of diesel was increased by MVR 3.62 per litre to MVR 17.54 per litre, representing an increase of 26%.
In a post on social media, Nizar said fuel prices in Addu were higher than the revised national rates.
According to the mayor, petrol in Addu is priced at MVR 29.26 per litre, while diesel is sold at MVR 30.13 per litre.
“These prices are high compared with the global market. Oil prices were not increased to this level even during the Gulf War, and the government should consider this,” Nizar said.
He also urged residents to reduce waste and manage spending carefully in response to the rise in fuel prices.
