Maldives secures renewed, higher import quotas from India for essential goods
The items covered under the agreement include eggs, potatoes, pulses, onions, rice, sugar, wheat flour, river sand and stone aggregates.
India has renewed quotas for the export of essential food commodities and construction materials to the Maldives following a request from the Maldivian government.
The High Commission of India in the Maldives announced on Wednesday that the quotas have been extended under the bilateral trade agreement between the two countries.
The items covered under the agreement include eggs, potatoes, pulses, onions, rice, sugar, wheat flour, river sand and stone aggregates.
According to the High Commission, the approved quantities for this year represent the highest allocation since the agreement was established in 1981.
The Commission stated that river sand and stone aggregates are required for construction activities in the Maldives.
It also noted that the quota for rice imports from India has been increased by 77 per cent.
The High Commission further stated that the Maldives will not be affected if India imposes export restrictions on these items for other countries.
India had also increased export quotas for the Maldives in the previous year.
