Maldives Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam arrived in India on Tuesday for her first official visit since assuming office last month.
Iruthisham, who previously served as the Maldives High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, was appointed foreign minister following the removal of Abdulla Khaleel.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the minister is scheduled to meet Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during the visit.
The ministry stated that discussions would focus on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors.
The visit comes shortly after President Mohamed Muizzu announced that the Maldives had repaid USD 50 million from a USD 200 million financial assistance package extended by India during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The financial facility was arranged through the State Bank of India (SBI).
According to the government, USD 50 million remains outstanding under the arrangement, with the final repayment scheduled for September 17.
The Maldives also repaid a USD 400 million currency swap facility to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) late last month after a third extension was not granted.
Following that repayment, India extended a new currency swap arrangement worth 30 billion Indian Rupees, equivalent to approximately USD 319 million, to the Maldives.
