Calibration of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) installed at the new runway at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been successfully completed, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) announced Friday.
The ILS system has been established at both ends of the runway.
ILS is a navigation aid which assists pilots to land in normal or extreme weather conditions.
MACL had earlier conducted ILS testing in collaboration with local airlines as well.
As part of the major project initiated by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration to develop VIA, a new runway was officially opened at VIA in September 2018. However, the new runway has only been used as a taxiway since February due to the delay in relocating the adjacent seaplane terminal.
MACL has announced that the new runway will be fully operationalised on 6 October.
