The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) employees working on the apron of Velana International Airport (VIA) will be paid a risk allowance, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Tuesday evening.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Mahchangolhi in Male on Tuesday evening, the president said the allowance would be paid from next month onwards.

"Apron workers are working with risks, so I assure them tonight that they will receive a risk allowance from October 1," the President said.

When the announcement was made to introduce a risk allowance for ramp officers at the airport, it had already resumed paying 50% of the salary to all its employees in USD. This was suspend in 2020 due to Covid.

Meanwhile, a subsidiary company has been created to oversee the work of air traffic controllers, and air traffic control was separated from the direct control of MACL this week. The president has said that the salary structure of air traffic controllers will be changed and the concerns of the employees will be resolved within the next month.

The president also announced last week that he would review the salary structure of aviation professionals.
